This is perhaps my favorite interview of all those I taped while conducting research for City on the Verge. As I wrote in the book, I walked up North Avenue from the old Sears warehouse and was about to turn left down Boulevard into the Bedford Pine apartment complex. I had heard that it was a dangerous, drug-infested neighborhood, so as I turned the corner, I asked an imposing black woman I met on the sidewalk if I would be safe. She eyeballed me up and down and said, “A white man with a camera and notebook? No, you would not be safe! Are you crazy?” We ended up having an interesting conversation, and when I realized how eloquent she was, I pulled my little digital tape recorder out of my pocket and turned it on…
