Mayor Shirley Franklin wrote an urgent letter to Congressman John Lewis, seeking help to counter what she called “GDOT’s boorish behavior and Amtrak’s willingness to play along.” The outraged mayor complained: “For a state agency to now flip-flop and at the last minute attempt to derail a well-thought-out and partially implemented plan is truly appalling.” A 250-person crowd protested at the edge of Piedmont Park. “I would like to see high-speed commuter rail,” said one participant, “but not through Piedmont Park.”
